Rosa Parks was a quiet, dignified African-American woman who, in a world of injustice, decided to politely defy a racist policy. In doing so, she ignited a fire in the soul of a community whose “cup of endurance” would permit not even one more comparatively small injustice. Her case resulted in the Montgomery Bus Boycott wherein some 40,000 African-Americans crippled the Montgomery transportation industry with their non-violent protest of the racist policy that mandated Parks to give up her seat for white riders. But, as an unknown black minister was who elected to lead the boycott protest, one Martin Luther King, Jr., noted, it wasn’t just the bus policy the African-American community was protesting, it was over 100 years of horrific injustice heaped upon a community whose founders had been forcibly brought to the United States.

Inside you will read about...

✓ A Dark Legacy
✓ The Winds of Change
✓ The Stage Is Set
✓ The Civil Rights Movement
✓ Life after the Boycott
And much more!

It was time for a change, and the act of defiance by Parks, though not the first sacrifice, created the spark that would ignite the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. This book tells the story of the context in which Parks’ refusal to yield her seat was set as well as the story of her life and legacy in a compelling, yet succinct, manner that is both packed with information and entertaining to read.

Rosa Parks The Woman Who Ignited a Movement eBook Hourly History

This is a very well-written book, but unfortunately, it is a stretch to label it as a story about Rosa Parks. I was hoping to learn more about the brave woman who started a chain reaction that began to unravel some of the restrictive laws that were in force in 1955. It is a shame that only a little more than a third of the book dealt with Rosa Parks, and if we removed the repetitive passages, that amount may drop to close to 25%.

It would have served the authors of the Hourly History series much better to create two books, one for Rosa Parks and another addressing the search or battle for equality. The author of this book provided a quick and decent history of civil rights and what happened in America after the Civil War. While the writing may have slanted a little toward one side, I was happy to see that the author provided some balance.

In the end, I feel that Hourly History missed a great opportunity and used the story of Rosa Parks to advance the history of racism in America rather than exposing readers to more of the layers of a person who had a tremendous impact on this country. Three stars.

Rosa Parks The Woman Who Ignited a Movement eBook Hourly History Reviews

This was a good start for learning about Ross Parks and the Civil Rights movement. I hope to read more about Ross Parks in the future.
Not knowing a lot about Rosa Parks this book helped me to better understand her life and how her decision changed the civil rights movement. Rosa was a quiet but determined woman who had finally had enough. This book tells you how and why she felt that way and what else she did to help ensure equality for others.
I learned a lot. Excellent book.
I learned a lot about the movement from this book. Very good for learning history of segregation. I recommend to anyone black or white who want to know the history of the 50/60's
One of the best Hourly History books so far. Author was a little opinionated but, definitely was very accurate. Rosa Parks was essential to the Civil Rights movement. She was extremely brave and very determined. I believe Rosa Parks was just as important to the Civil Rights movement as Martin Luther King Jr.
This selection from the Hourly History series was a very good read, providing a solid overview of Ms. Parks' pivotal moment in time and a brief recounting of the rest of her life. It's a taste of events, prompting further study if your interest is sufficiently piqued. In its short text (average reading time seems to be about an hour), the facts are covered and even a brief history of the search for African-American equality in the US is examined. I'm planning to check into more of the Hourly History series for myself and nephews & nieces.

Disclosure I received a free copy of this book. My review is my honest reaction to the material.
I really enjoyed this book about Rosa Parks and the discrimination that minorities faced. The book started with a description of the discrimination that minorities faced starting with the Reconstruction Era. There were several descriptions of Supreme Court decisions during that era that legalized discrimination against minorities, particularly African-American. Next, there was a description about how women in general and African-Americans participated in World War II both on the war and home front. Americans fought against the evil of Hitler, who believed in radical discrimination has been killing people because of their origins. The Civil Rights Movement started long before Rosa Parks was born; nevertheless, she played a prominent role in both the bus boycott, and many related activities all of her life. The book lists numerous important Civil Rights leaders and individuals that Rosa Parks came to know or worked with. I recommend that anyone interested in the history of the Civil Rights Movement and or the life of Rosa Parks will enjoy this book. This book is a brief introduction to the Civil Rights Movement and Rosa Parks life. This brief introduction is like an appetizer prior to a full meal which would entail further research on these topics.
