A well-researched fast-moving novel about the first convict fleet to sail to Australia. It tells of hardships and injustices of life in England prior to the fleet's departure, followed by the privations, the misery, the love affairs, the conflicts and courage displayed during the eight-month voyage via Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town to Botany Bay and Sydney Cove.
The book is a factual account of the arduous voyage of the eleven small sailing ships and of the convicts' new lives in a hostile country. It is peopled with both historical and fictional characters who laid the foundations of the Australian nation.

Because I am an a history buff I waded through the book which as far as I am concern was very very close to reality.I could decipher people reported in history with other names - It was a really cruel time. It has made me think what was it like
for earlier convicts who went to USA because deportantion to America had stopped It certainly makes you wonder how a man could be so cruel even though they were supposed to be the the responsible beings. Thank Goodnes our great land survived with the strenght of these people who probably only commited a crime to get food on the table for families also a few good men who had ideals. Also the plight of our dear aboriginies was exposed in the latter part of the book.

More like a mills and boon novel,too much dialogue really quite boring. Couldn't wait to finish it.
I found this book to be very hard to put down. It contains historic facts along with a very good story line.
As an ex pat Pom, I could relate to the places and events in this book.
It is a well written story and flows along well.
A chilling reminder of how the rich treated the poor. I am much has changed over 130 years. unfortunately, England seemed to transport some of her best people.
Kept me interested even though it wasn't a record of history, it was a record of tough times. I wanted it to go on further into the subjects lives so perhaps he will write another one.
Good sea story
It was a long journey for them and an even longer journey through the book for me. Somehow it just seemed to drag on and on. Story wasn't too bad. Not quite realistic but if you kept that in mind, it was okay.
I'm sorry, but this book left me cold. The characters seemed like cardboard cutouts, not people I could relate to. Just not my cup of tea.
